Will your cat and dog ever be friends?

cat and dogSome people like cats, others prefer dogs, and then there are those pet lovers who don't discriminate. But having both a cat and a dog can be stressful, at least at first. So how do you make sure your cat doesn't end up becoming your dog's dinner?

Seven myths about neutering your cat

You have probably heard some, if not all, of these completely untrue myths surrounding the neutering debate:

'They get fat'

Females of any animal tend to carry more weight than males. This is simply a fact of nature. Your cat will only become obese or grossly overweight if you over-indulge her in treats and goodies and do not ensure your furry friend receives a well balanced diet and some exercise.

Can you handle having several cats?

And then there were two. Or three. Or even more. You might have planned to have more than one cat but most of the time it just happens, so how do you make it work?

Think about it from your cat’s perspective: she was enjoying having the house and you all for herself and boom! there’s a stranger in the house stealing her food, using her litter tray and getting your affection. On the other hand, for the new cat this is also a daunting experience. Your pets will probably become friends eventually, but those first few weeks might prove to be tricky.

Does your cat have a vice?

We all have at least one bad habit, but how do you deal with your cat's vices? Does your kitty constantly jump on the table or scratch the furniture? Does she wake you up at five a.m. asking for food or to be let out? Or do you come home to find your pet has made a toilet out of your bath mat?

Whatever the bad habit, the first rule of teaching your cat to be good is to stop punishing her. Cats who are punished associate their owner with the bad experience and not only will continue their bad behaviour but might even decide to leave. Instead, try outsmarting your kitty.

Kids and Cats

When I first brought home our new cat Boris almost three years ago, my kids were three and six years old. They were so excited they wanted to play with the new kitten all the time. And while the older one was more sensible and respectful, the toddler just couldn't understand why pulling Boris's tail or chasing him around the house and then poking him in the ribs was a bad idea. Boris responded by hiding under the table for the first couple of days until finally settling down in his own little sanctuary on the window ledge.

Benefits of Neutering Your Cat - Part 2

Apart from the obvious advantage of controlling the number of unwanted animals in this world, having your furry friend neutered protects them from a number of often fatal diseases later in life. Cancer of the reproductive systems in both female and male cats is not unusual in unneutered felines.

Benefits of Neutering Your Cat

There are many reasons to neuter your cat. If you are not planning to breed from your cat for show purposes, then neutering is an absolute must, particularly if your cat is allowed outside of the home, onto the streets.

What To Consider Before Buying A New Cat or Kitten

Before you reach the stage of 'going to pick one out' you have many decisions to make. Firstly, you have to decide whether a cat or a kitten would fit in best. Kittens generally require more planning and attention, but will be a 'new slate' upon which you can write your own rules. But they can be quite a handful, depending upon the breed.
