We have never ever bathed our cats. But we do groom them at least once a week to check that they are ok, have no wounds under the fur, and are flea free.
Cats naturally dislike water (being immersed in it anyhow) and the oils in their coats protects their skin. Removing this oil by bathing is not a good idea.
Obviously if your dear puss has been rolling in some unspeakable muck then you may have to rinse him off gently, without making him or her even more terrified.
Just have a thought for the fear the cat could be feeling. And the confusion. You his loving owner, now trying to force him into a bowl of water ? It is confusing for them.
Kindness and empathy go a long way to looking after a cat, who will reward you with years of adoration and love.
