Cat Insurance - Is it worth it really ?

We have two cats, both the very big friendly breed Norwegians, and recently one of them came home with a bad leg.

It turned out she had been bitten, probably by a rat, and had to stay at a vets hospital for a week while her leg was amputated.

She is recovering well but my bank balance isn't. It cost me almost UK£1000 for her treatment, and while I dont begrudge her it, I am wondering now whether this would have been covered under some kind of cat medical insurance.

What do you other cats lovers on this forum do ?

Well mate, you really answered your own question didn't you?

We have three cats and they are all insured. It was not very cheap, but way cheaper than what you had to pay for your cats leg accident.

I would not drive my car without insurance, and I would not allow my wife to go without health insurance, so why would I allow our family bets to go without insurance? It means they get the right treatment, no matter what it costs, even if we dont have the money to pay for it.

It's a no-brainer to me. Get it before something else happens.

Our cat had a serious road accident, but could have been treated by the vet in hospital. It cost a lot of money, they would have had to put pins in her legs and spine.

The cost was just too much for us, and we had to take the very hard decision to have her put to sleep, she was in such pain, I could see it in her eyes.

So my advice is to get the insurance. But read the fine print carefully and make sure it covers you for all kinds of things. Someone else I know had a cat with an intestinal blockage, which again needed costly surgery. They could not afford it either, and the whole family was traumatised by losing their beloved friend.

It is something I would never do without again.

Our cat insurance is not expensive and it gives us one thing which is priceless.

And that is knowing that if our much loved puss needs treatment for anything, she will get it, so we get peace of mind.

It is priceless for us. I cant imagine the anguish of not being able to afford to have a member of your family fixed by the vet. Very sorrry for your losses, you previous posters. Terrible.
