Cats Eyes In The Road

Why are those reflective rubber bumps with glass in them called cats eyes in the UK? They dont look anything like cats eyes to me.

They are called cat's eye because they are reflecting light in the same way as cat's eyes

it's so obvious :)

Cat's eyes are a brilliant invention - if you are out at night in a car and your lights pick up the cats eyes - usually at the centre of the road or on an upcoming off ramp, then they do glitter exactly like a cats eyes would if your lights fell on them.
I believe the cats eyes are reflective balls set into a chunk of rubber inserted into the road and they were invented by a Brit I am told. They definitely make driving at night easier.
