Why are those reflective rubber bumps with glass in them called cats eyes in the UK ?

They dont look anything like cats eyes to me.

They are called cat's eye because they are reflecting light in the same way as cat's eyes

Cat's eyes are a brilliant invention - if you are out at night in a car and your lights pick up the cats eyes - usually at the centre of the road or on an upcoming off ramp, then they do glitter exactly like a cats eyes would if your lights fell on them.

I believe the cats eyes are reflective balls set into a chunk of rubber inserted into the road and they were invented by a Brit I am told.

They definitely make driving at night easier.
