I would wait until I got to know the kitten or cat a little and then base the name on their personality.
We had one who was very shy, and hid under furniture when new people came into the house. We named her Scaredy (as in the English 'scaredy-cat') which is someone who is unusually scared of things.
Another became known as 'GG' not because he looked like a horse, but more because he always ate his own food, then tried to eat everyone elses food also. Hence GG (Greedy Guts).
Another cat was not crossed with a larger breed to the best of my knowledge, but he was BIG, and I mean as big as a poodle. We named him 'Big Boy' because he really was. But a softie at heart.
Sometimes people base the name of the cat on their colour, or of course the generic 'puss' or 'madam' are both popular cats names for female cats that is.
For a boy, Tom seems good to me. We had a three legged cat in Ireland who was named Tom.
Please no tacky or ugly names for kittens or children! They know if they have an embarassing name, and it effects their personality. Our present ones are Sister, as when we got her brother, my husband named her Van because he found her in one at work. I told him it has to be Vanessa, and he did not like that name, so Sister she became. Buddy or Buddy Boy showed up in our yard, and started "helping" my husband in the garage, so is his Buddy, and prefers him to me. My husband says it is because I suggest we take him off and not keep him and he knows it!! Anyway, he has now been here over a year and a half. The two new kittens are Thomas or Tom or Tom Kitten, maybe someday, and Samanatha, my husband thought that sounded exotic. I said for a Siamese it should be more SueLing, or such far eastern sound. She is Samanatha, or Sammy or Sammy Jo to some. Let their personality help. My last Siamese was Freddy Cat, a Laotian student gave me the cat when I carried a Christmas gift by his house, so I named the cat after him. Name your pet with care. They have feelings, too, and some names may make them have a certain personality.

I think Billy and Mimi are lovely cat names and they seem 2 suit most kittens.

Wait to get to know your kitten or cat before naming him or her.
Ours just loves to curl up in the coal basket - so we call her Jet. Because she is black and gets very black dusted when she does it.
Cats are much more friendly and selective who they want to be friends with than dopey dogs.
