Collars For Cats

I was looking at some cute collars for Sandy our cat. They had all colours from pink to bright orange.

My friend said they were not suitable though, because they did not have a piece of elastic sewn into the collar.

We looked in another pet store which did have the elastic ones, but is my friend right and what difference does it make?

Cats climb trees. Those with collars can get the collar caught on a branch. If the cat loses his grip on the tree and falls wearing a collar with no elastic the cat will be hung and die.

Cats wearing elasticated collars will not because the elastic will stretch allowing them to wriggle out of the collar and fall to the ground gracefully.

Your friend was exactly right.

I am totally against collars on cats .My first ever cat came home with a leg through his collar the other part was across his mouth. He had lost teeth and his mouth was cut and bleeding from it.I cut it off and threw it away and have never put a collar ona cat since.
A friend of mine bought two kittens last year and she put collars on them .I warned her about what colud happen but she didn't listen and did it anyway. weeks later pretty much the same thing happened to one of them so she threw the collars away.
The only safe collars are those that have a breakaway safety catch if they get caught but the best thing is to get your cat microchipped.

I agree with Liz but lots of people cannot afford to have their pets microchipped.

That would be in an ideal world, yes everyone would have their cat microchipped. But sadly I dont think it is possible in todays society.

Ask your vet if they have the breakaway collar, because again Liz is right, in many cases the collars can cause injury to the cat.

Even those with elastic can cause problems. We had a cat once who came home one day wearing his collar around his waist ! Needless to say I cut it off very quickly, and he never wore a collar again.

Cats climb, they love to climb. So do your pet a favour and dont put a collar on him without the elastic and even WITH the elastic. Go to some trouble to find the 'breakaway' type collars, and when you find them, buy a stock of them, so that if your cat comes home without it you can replace it easily.
