Feeding Cats Fish
Added by
Elsa, 27 Feb 2009 09:15 Our cat just loves fish. She loves it raw, she loves it cooked. When I buy fish I ask the fish man to remove the head and gut the fish, putting those bits in to a separate bag.
I cook the fish (baked in the oven usually) for us, and Tibby gets the guts raw and the heads boiled. I keep the water the heads are cooked in to use for the next batch of fish I cook for her.
She does not only get fish, but about once a week, and seems to really relish it. She does not eat the bones, and in fact I do not give her bones. She seems to enjoy the chewing the head and licking it more than actually eating it.
It seems a harmless thing for her and she really loves it, but my friend was horrified when I told her. But I know some cats in the wild actually catch fish from small streams and eat them, so it can't be harmful can it?
I'd be interested to hear what other cat lovers think.
Thanks.

Domenique, 01 Mar 2009 09:39 Traditionally cats ate fish. They ate other things as well, but most protein came from fish in the wilds. Some from small rodents too and birds.
As long as your cats diet is balanced and contains all the nutrients she needs for good growth and health, then it does not matter if she has meat, fish or any other protein.
And it depends what she likes and is used to. Not many cats these days get the luxury of a fish head to chew on, and I think you are being exceptionally kind to your puss to provide this treat for her.
She sounds a very happy cat indeed - and why wouldn't she be ?
Best wishes
