I have been reading more and more about cats being put on strict vegetarian diets.
What do others think of cats being put on this type of diet ? They eat birds and rats etc in the wild, I am sure, so isn't it rather unnatural to make them not eat meat?
It is supposed to make their teeth last longer according to the article I read somewhere on line (not here), but what about making sure they get vital nutrients from meat - they need that don't they ?

Hi Jenny
Yes I heard that too. But to me it seems very unnatural. Cats need a high protein diet, and whilst they can get it from beans and pulses there are certain minerals which beans and pulses do not have, which meat does.
You probably will find a choice of both types of feed at your vets office and at most supermarkets. Maybe try your pet out with some of the new stuff and see if she likes it ?
I suspect that any feline who is able to will supplement their vegetarian diets by catching mice and birds since their body will tell them (subconsciously) that they need more iron or whatever is lacking in the veggie diet.
My local butchers shop has a lady who has two Maine Coon cats, and she only EVER feeds them meat. They get the best fillet steak and chicken breasts she can find - AND she cooks the meat for them too. Of course, they love it and are in excellent health.
Those two cats probably eat better than many people on this planet today.
Do tell us what you decide to do and how you get on if you decide to change your cats diet.
Regards
Erica

I am unfamiliar with the name of Maine Coon. Is that a type of breed of cat? Is it those really bald looking ones with the big bat ears?
Hope someone can tell me, thank you everyone.

Hi Angela
Go to the top of this page, click on the green tab which says 'Cat Breeds' and look at the one marked 'Maine Coon'. It tells you everything you need to know about these gentle giants.
One you have one, I guarantee you will never want an ordinary moggy again.
Best
Elize
