maine coon kitten behaviour -advice needed

my husband and i have had our baby maine coon kitten for a week now and he hides away all the time. he is 15 weeks old and only uses the litter tray and eats when we are not around. we have to "drag" him out of hiding to show him any form of affection and he immediately slinks straight back in, given a chance to get away. he has not made a sound since he has arrived here. is this normal and what can we do to help him?
