We lost our beautiful baby Whisky to an accident (with a truck) last week, and whilst we buried her in her favourite spot in the garden, we are completely lost without her.

Some people think we are crazy being so attached to 'just' a cat, but we never could have children, something wrong with my ladies things, so Whisky was the closest we ever got.

I just dont know how we are ever going to get over her loss. She was our constant companion, even coming on family holidays in our caravan to Cornwall.

My husband said maybe we should think about having another rescue cat, but no one will ever replace our beloved Wkisky.

What should we do ?

Dear Anna & Fred

I sympathise because we lost one of our cats to a road accident. And he was like a brother or sister to me. People who dont have pets dont understand how close they become to the family.

I think it is too soon to think about having another pet, but after a month or so, I believe it would be beneficial to you to have another pet upon whom to lavish your love and affection.

There are millions of cats in the UK who are badly treated, dumped, hurt and generally abused as well as millions who end up (through no fault of their own) in a rescue centre.

Give yourselves a couple of weeks to grieve and then go to your local rescue centre. You wont find another Whisky but you will find a pet who is looking for someone like you to love and befriend.

God bless

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. It is like a loss of a family member, especially when in such a brutal way.

The previous poster is correct I think. Give yourself some more weeks to mourn the loss of your beloved pet. Then think of the millions of unwanted cats at rescue centres all over the UK.

The Cats Protection League helps with re-homing, but be prepared they will usually come and inspect the home and ask your history with cats. This is not intended as being critical of you, more for the cats protection, and should be something you welcome. Loving homes are difficult to find and placement officers try to match the personality of the cat going into a new home with the owners. So it is to your benefit to meet with them and chat first.

I know you probably feel like you dont want another cat as it just wont be Whisky, but given some more time, you may re-consider and share your home and love with another new companion. In my experience every cat has its own personality, and a new one will go out of its way to win your heart and may help to relieve the sorrow you feel right now.

All the very best

Samantha.

PS CPL are in the phone books under Charities.

Hello Anna & Fred

The same thing happened to us, we lost our much loved puss Snoozer and it took us years to get over the loss.

Even after adopting another puss from a rescue centre, we still think of our beloved Snoozer althugh the pain is gradually fading. We know she has gone to a better place and thank God for the years we had with her.

I would allow yourself a month or two and them jump in and rescue another needy cat. He or she will never replace your lost pet, but will endear himself to you in ways that your late cat did not. Each cat has its own personality and you are bound to be distracted from the grief in getting to know your new companion.

I would confirm what others have said elsewhere here, and that is that your cat(s) should ALWAYS ALWAYS be kept in at night. That is when they are most at risk and it is a well known fact.

Insurance companies lower their premiums usually if you make it clear that your cat is neutered and is NOT EVER allowed to go out of the home at night.

My sympathy and hope this helps you.
