We have three cats in the family, and one of them, Blackie, always sleeps on my bed.

If I am in my bed, he snuggles up (outside the blankets) and sometimes I wake up to find him asleep on my chest.

My mum is worried that he will lay on my face in the night and stop me breathing. Which seems rather far fetched to me. I am 14 now and he hasn't done it in the last 5 years.

But thought I would just ask.

Where does your cat sleep ? Is it dangerous to sleep with a cat ?

Hi William

What a kind young man you sound. Cats go for the warmest spot they can find to curl up in and fall asleep.

As you say, your puss has been sharing your bed for a few years now, and I think there is no chance of him doing that (sleeping on your face).

And even if he did get too close for comfort, you would wake up and shift him slightly. I'm sure that has happened before and you really dont remember being so sleepy.

Personally, I love sleeping with our cats (they too sleep on the top cover of the bed) although sometimes without knowing one or other of them gets kicked off in the night when one is turning over or moving your legs around.

Cats make wonderful companions, and obviously your cat really enjoys nights with you, or he simply would find somewhere else he likes better.

Reassure mum that your furry friend is a comfort for you and you like having him with you (if you do, as it sounds). Mums are programmed to take every possible care of their children, so she is only looking out for you.

Take care

Mary

When I lived in London I had two cats, both rescue cats, who I always kept in at night.

They slept on the bed beside me, at first down by my legs, but often I would wake up and one of them would be asleep on my chest. They find the warmest snuggest place next to their beloved owner. And I think that is great.

So long as the pet is free from fleas and is clean and well groomed, I see no reason for not allowing them to sleep on the (outside) of the bed - but wouldn't much like it under the blankets. They could suffocate too.

You sound very nice young guy. Good for you.

kind wishes

Carly

Our cats always sleep where they want. One, likes to sleep with us, but near our knees on top of covers. One refuses to have anything to do with the bedroom. She sleeps on the sofa or elsewhere. We think our previous Queen told her to keep out of the bedroom. She will sleep on our laps or with us on a recliner, she just does not do beds or baths, and will let you know it. One likes to sleep on my pillow, which I do not prefer. I have added another pillow between mine and the headboard, which has worked out. One wants as close to me as possible.
As a sign of mine says, dogs have Masters, cats have Staff!
