My son is now four years old, and we are thinking of getting him a pet. We all prefer cats to dogs, but want to make the right choice.

Being a little boy, he is quite loud and will doubtless squeeze and 'huggle' a cat, so we need one which will not scratch or take his eye out when he does it too hard.

What type of breed would be best ? All opinions greatly received.

Thanks all.

Hello Dannielle

If you are thinking of getting a cat as a companion to a young child you really ought to go for a breed which is known to be tolerant and kind.

If you get one from a rescue centre, you dont know what they will have gone through before getting there, and their temperament is unknown until you get them home, which is too late.

My advice would be to read the articles on here (green tab at the top which says 'cat breeds') and pick one of them which says that the cats are generally reliable around small children.

Then when you find a breeder of that type of cat, go and talk to him or her first, before you select which cat. Tell the breeder that you have a young son and she or he will pick one of theirs who they know will be kind and friendly to a young boy.

In my experience, the larger breeds are better, not only because they are stronger, and can take more 'hugs' but also because they generally have a very kind and loving character.

Hope this helps you.

Best
